There is no xorg.conf by default. Newer versions of X autodetect
everything if this file is absent.

If you want one, shut down X and do the following from the console:
sudo xorg -configure

This should tell you where it puts the file

Test it with:
sudo xorg -config /path/to/xorg.conf

If you get a movable mouse and the wierd backround, it works - hit
CTRL-ALT-BACKSPACE to quit.

Move the previously generated xorg.conf file to:
/etc/X11/xorg.conf

Now, you have a proper xorg.conf. The -configure method will basically
dump the config that X automatically makes for itself should it be
absent, so there should functionally be no difference between them IF
you don't modify this file... but it does give you the basis to tweak
stuff.
