You don't want to use Line-In unless you have real recording equipment.
The SB Live is a good card, but the inputs are very noisy. For
recording, I personally have an M-Audio Fast Track Pro (a $200 device...).

Is the USB turntable class-compliant? If not, I suggest you return it
and find one that is. Generally you can tell this by the OSes they
support. If it supports both Windows and OSX, chances are it's
class-compliant. It may even specify if it is (my M-Audio mentions that,
for instance).

Class-compliant basically means it works without a driver. Under Linux,
the audio would work via the driver you compiled. You may need
particular configuration to get things to work the way you need them to.
