I'm guessing mplayer is defaulting to using X commands to show the video,
as in "-vo x11".
Do "mplayer -vo help". Try each in turn (well, skip those you already know
won't help, such as aalib and pcm) a la "mplayer -vo foo filename". Then
put the best one in ~/.mplayer/config as a line
