[SLUG] X performance degredation with new video card

When I first setup my current system a few years ago, I thought the
on-board video card only supported 640x480 VGA graphics. I mooched a
PCI/PCIX video card from my roommate and set everything up for that.

Well, something happened to that card, and now it hangs for a long time
at boot before snowcrashing. After numerous reboots, waits, and
attempts at modifying the cooling flow, I gave up on the card and
switched to the on-board at 10 PM so I could have SOMETHING for the
night.

It turns out the onboard is a decent chipset, apparently an ATI RAGE 128,
and supports much higher resolutions than I realized. 1280x1024.

I used `X -configure` to generate a new xorg.conf which I've been using.
I made tweaks to the modelines to get the resolution right. The only
other obvious differences are what modules it loads.

But, now I've got new issues. The color depth still isn't satisafactory
(it's set to 24, but all the darks just blob together) and there are
problems with mplayer.

Mplayer video is very choppy and I can't adjust playback contrast like
I could before, but I can still do brightness but it doesn't work as well.
Overall, skin tones are orange.

I modified the xorg.conf to load the extra modules, but no joy.

top is showing both xorg and mplayer at or near 100%.

I use twm as my window manager, but just tried in gnome with the same
result.

I don't even know what direction to look at the moment.
Any ideas?
