Hi Eben,

I don't recall ever hearing any sound from a motherboard. It is the fans
and mechanical drives that are making sound.

If you use quiet fans, usb sticks for external memory and a solid state
hard drive your computer will be quieter than the sound of your own
breath most of the time. You will hear the clock on the wall before you
hear the computer.

Not to mention the stereo, TV, kids . . .

I have a standard box humming away in the room where I sleep. The AC
unit makes a lot more noise.
