[SLUG] audio effects

Way back when (e.g. when the Power Mac 7100 was new, which would place it in
the mid-1990s), there was a MacOS program that would take your audio input
(CD, mic, whatever) and do real-time audio effects (such as pitch shift,
distortion, echo) on it. I figured with computers being much more powerful
now such programs ought to be plentiful. But the last time I looked I
couldn't find any. Sure, a big honkin' commercial program that does
everything but cook breakfast might do it too, but are there any free[1]
programs that do it doo?

[1] "as in beer" is my main concern, but "as in speech" would be nice too
