[SLUG] recovering from crash

I use xfce. Occasionally an app does something bad (I think) which freezes
the window manager but everything else (AFAICT) keeps running and updating
-- gkrellm's graphs scroll, the mouse pointer moves and the eye in the
taskbar "looks" at the pointer, but I can't change focus or type or
resize/move any windows. Is there a way to kick or replace the window
manager without losing all my unsaved work in X?

...

Scratch that. This works:

Find xfwm4 and kill it OR run "killall xfwm4"
Run: "DISPLAY=:0 xfwm4 &"

It'll complain a bit:

** (xfwm4:2791): WARNING **: The display does not support the XRandr extension.

** (xfwm4:2791): WARNING **: The display does not support the XComposite extension.

** (xfwm4:2791): WARNING **: Compositing manager disabled.

and it'll look a bit different but it runs. It's probably a good idea to
exit X in an orderly manner before long, because other stuff might not work
either.
