[SLUG] handheld computer

I just got a Nokia N810 "Internet Tablet". It's a gizmo that looks like a
PDA, has a slide-out QWERTY (sorta) keyboard, a user-facing 176x144 camera,
and speaks 802.11g and Bluetooth, among other things. It runs Maemo, which
is a distro related to Debian.

What I want to do with it is to have it act as an MP3 player, which I can
log into remotely and stop/start songs on a Samba/SMB share. It'd be nice
if I could change volume too.

So far I've installed rootsh (su), openSSH, and xmms. At the device I can
launch MP3s from a remote share by selecting a folder-full in the N810's
file manager and hitting "enter", or I can ssh to it and tell xmms to play a
local file with xmmsctrl (I think). What I'd like to do is be able to play
files from a share, remotely. I think I can do this if I find smbfs so I
can mount the share, then point xmms at it. OR, I can run vnc but that
seems higher-bandwidth and likely to break if X or eth0 goes down. Also, I
have to baby sit it because I can only queue up a folder at a time that way
(not with xmms) and random play is out.

So, has anyone dealt with a similar device, or have an idea about where to
get smbfs or an MP3 player that speaks SMB?
