[SLUG] Embedded system for my mouse project

Hey Sluggers.

Last night, I talked to many of you about my "double mouse" idea...I
have been working on it all night last night and all day today.

My thought is to set the thing up as multiple usb devices around a
generic hub, at least to the computer, so I can use the usb hid
standards and not need hardware drivers for the OS's (so, if you want
to use it in Haiku or something, you can).  I also want it to have a
thumbdrive in it to store flat config files for the programmable
buttons, so you don't need client software for the macros.  Then, the
mouse itself executes the macros and sends the appropriate strokes to
the computer.  Does anyone know a good embedded processor for this
project...at least for my little prototype (for me).  I looked at the
www.systronix.com stuff, with chips that you can program in JAVA, but
I don't really know what I am looking for...this is all new to me...

Also, can someone recommend a good resource to point me in the
direction of "embedded crap for dummies"...this is a very cool hack
for me, but I am afraid I have no experience hacking together hardware
like this, especially usb stuff...

Cheers,

----
