There used to be links in /etc/init.d to stuff in /sbin/init.d that was
*supposed* to provide compatibility but when an install program
referenced files as ../init.d/whatever the link business didn't work.
That's probably why they changed it

I'm all for consistency and install programs that work, but I never
thought that SuSE was odd. I started with slackware and felt right at
home with SuSE.

and still do.
