I have a question: doesn't kdm halt first, since you're able to see the other
shutdown messages in the console? OTOH, perhaps you could check your rc.d
files and look for something like "K01kdm" ... I know that when I shutdown my
system, the first thing that goes is kdm, since I only have the console left
to tell me that everything else is shutting down...
