Coyote Linux is designed to be used as a router.
In the past, I used this distro to set up a gateway
that boots up from a floppy, on a 486 (after
installation, I removed my harddrive and fan from the
system for quiet operation of the box). This is
distro has great documentation, some of which may help
you.
