Sounds like some heavy swapping could be happening.. next time this
happens try running 'vmstat 2' in a terminal or on a virtual console.. if
the 'si' and 'so' numbers are jumping around then you are swapping in/out
a lot.. either try a newer kernel or get some more RAM..
