The free versions of star office have always been that way as far as I can
remember. You have to buy the really really cheap CD to do a global install.
The binaries you download can be thought of as one of two things. A shell
wrapper, or like binaries that contain a subshell. The ./setup command is
initiated inside this "subshell" and you don't get to see it.
