*THERE ARE ONLY TWO IDE HARDWARE RAID DEVICES SUPPORTED BY LINUX*
*MOST IDE "HARDWARE RAID" SOLUTIONS ACTUALLY DO RAID IN BIOS OR DRIVERS*
*ANY MOTHERBOARD CHIPSET THAT DOES IDE RAID IS GOING TO SUCK*
There.... now the details:
The supported devices are the 3Ware series of IDE RAID cards. The other
is the ARCO "Duplidisk" which is a weird little gizmo that isn't even an
IDE controller - it actually looks like a hard drive to the system but
you plug two hard drives into it and it reads/writes simultaneously to
both of them.
Just about every "hardware RAID" device I've ever seen has miserable
performance because, like I said, the RAID is either done on the card's
BIOS or in the driver, and is usually pretty shoddily done. The
integrated chipsets that are used on motherboards are the worst of the
lot because they just want to crank those out as fast and cheap as
possible. Then, since you need driver support to enable these options,
that leaves Linux right out of the picture unless you use BIOS access
which is slow as the dickens. Although I've noticed that as of 2.4.14 I
think, there is a "Hardware IDE RAID Device" option in the kernel
config. However, as mentioned above, since all these devices suck, I've
not even bothered investigating which ones are supported.
Here's where you can find the ACTUAL REAL HARDWARE IDE RAID devices

However, 3Ware had announced they were discontinuing their line of IDE
RAID controllers, but there has been rumour that, due to public outcry
(primarily from the Linux and FreeBSD camps, since 3Ware is really good
about supporting free OS's) they've changed their mind. There's been no
notice on their website about the "now we're NOT discontinuing them"
decision yet though so as of now, it's just a rumour.
