[SLUG] modem help

I hope someone can help me with this. I'm trying to get a US Robotics modem to work on my laptop with linux so I can pull M$ off of it completely.

The problem I'm having probably isn't with the modem, I'm able to dial out and it appears to connect, but then pppd dies.

The messages I'm seeing in the log are:

ATZ
OK
ATM1L1
OK
ATDT7278127000
CONNECT 31200/ARQ/V34/LAPM/V42BIS

Than at the bottom "Starting pppd". It sits for awhile then I get a message that pppd has died.

Can anyone point me in the right direction on this, if more info is needed please feel free to ask.
