I have a similar setup, except it's a 486 box with kernel 2.2.X.

Why is your IP assigned to ppp0? Why not run dhcp and get your IP from
eth0 when the machine comes up (assuming the DSL modem is up and running
at the time)? I assume your eth0 is connected to the DSL modem?
