I dont know if this will help you or not. But, you should be able to
ping your default gateway BEFORE you add your default route. Example,
your router should have some type of ethernet interface on your current
segment that you can ping (Like the IP address you are using for your
default gateway).
If you cannot ping your default route BEFORE adding it, its either: The
wrong default route, the router has a firewall infront of it blocking
ICMP, or the router itself is filtering ICMP.
