The postal "snail mail" letter that he received was indeed Verisign
bottom-feeding off of unsuspecting customers.
The electronic email spam that you (and I) received is a scam
perpetrated by "inte-net.com". They've run this scam a couple of times
in the past few years it seems. I think people thought they had stopped.
Whenever I get questionable mail like this, the first thing I do is a
quick google groups search with identifying information (like
"inte-net.com"). It's suprising how enlightening USENET can be.
