I like tear for mp3 ripping (the cdparanoia library provides the most
stable ripping I've *ever* seen, and you can use it with many
frontends).

I've heard xine recommended for DVD playing; I've never tried it.

As for games -- I haven't found a solution more to my own satisfaction
than dual booting. win4lin is fine for productivity apps, but you'd
likely need VMWare for things involving DirectX, and either way you're
still running Microsoft Windows and you still need a license for that
purpose. To get good performance for MS Windows games, run them in MS
Windows. That's my opinion.
