In the vein of filtering SPAM, I highly recommend using Spamassassin
combined with procmail for the local MDA. Works like a charm for me at
home. It can even be combined with fetchmail to filter pop mail.

For a more complete solution (spam filtering plus virus scanning), I
recommend combining Mailscanner with Spamassassin:
