I had much the same problem with one of my machines, turned out to be
the version of the kernel wasn't supporting the hardware I had very
well. Up-grading the software seemed to have solved the problem.
What is version of the kernel are you running? If it's RH 7.1 without
upgrades I would beat it's around 2.4.9-21 version. I would recommend
getting updates from RedHat (sign up for their free for 1 machine
up2date program, Redhat network) or upgrade to the latest Redhat 7.3
which comes with Kernel 2.4.18.x
