Thanks for the browsing info Ian and everybody. I'm still having problems:
When I try to browse the PDC from my RH 7.2 box I'm logged on as root. The
PDC has an account with name = root which has the same password.
I've tried Nautilus with command: smb: That allows me to see all of the
machines on the network including the PCC.
I've also tried Konqueror with command: lan:/ That returns "could not
connect to host localhost"
I'm dead in the water for now. Any more suggestions?
On the upside I converted home pc from Slack 8 to RH 7.2 and with CD 2 was
able to get gnucash running - thanks Mike, I never really checked out that
CD before. I've configured it to track a checking acount. Haven't done
anything other than initial account info and outstanding check entry but
that much seems to work fine. Slightly different arrangement and seems more
complex than Quicken but still intuitive and pretty quick to understand.
No auto check number generation
No screen keypad for number entry
Has calendar graphic for date entry
Has many different types of accounts - something seems conceptually
different here than with quicken
Info for each check occupies only one line, not two like quicken and so is a
little cramped but it's ok.
I took a quick look at Moneydance: It was quick to load and, just as Patrick
said, it appeared to be easier to set up. I'm going to run the two side by
side for awhile.

You do NOT need "Services For Unix" (Microsoft's SFU product), nor any
other form of Unix services installed on your NT/Win2k/XP box for SMB
(SAMBA, etc) filesharing to work. You only need these add-ons if you
want native Unix NFS filesharing to function. NFS is completely
different than SMB (in a number of ways).
If you're having a problem mapping to to the PDC, it's usually a problem
with encryption, which you seem to have enabled. The only time you will
not need "encryption" for SMB connections these days is with an older
WinNT 4.0 box (earlier service packs), a Win98 box without service
packs, or a Win95 box. Anything newer than that needs encryption enabled
(this can be disabled in the registry, however).
Your machine should not need to be part of the Domain to map a share to
the PDC. Membership in a Domain is only required if you're
authenticating connections (against the Domain controllers) to a server
from other client machines.
Are you sure you're using the same username on both sides? Your Unix
name must be the same as an NT username on the PDC, unless you specify
it differently in the connection string.
