Finally! I called Earthlink DSL tech support, and after 20-30 minutes of
waiting, got a very knowledgeable rep who was able to help me with
Linux! He asked me what my mail client was, and I told him (laughing)
kmail...and he said, what version of Linux are you running? Most
impressive! I told him, and we were off and running. This is in stark
contrast to Verizon telling me, "We don't really support Linux..." The
Verizon people also don't seem to have a clue, either, since most of my
questions seemed to be beyond what they could answer.
The tech at Earthlink told me that I could use smtp authentication, and
sure enough, it works! The only problem is that kde doesn't allow for a
username/password combo in the sending mail section of its config. So,
I'm using Mozilla to send.
Is there a way to configure exim or sendmail to do smtp authentication
the same way that Mozilla does?
TIA! And thanks for everyone's input so far. I must say that I'm very
impressed with Earthlink, too, since every time I call them, the guy on
the other end knows something about Linux...
