[SLUG] plip install

I am trying to install SuSE Linux 8.0 on an old laptop that I inherited.
There is no CDROM, and the only network card I have is 10 mbs and my hub is
100 mbs, so unfortunately that route doesn't work. I've been trying to do it
via the paralell port driver, but no luck as of yet. I've been trying to
follow the plip howto instructions, but the error messages I see in
/var/log/messages makes me think that perhaps I have some kind of hardware
error. Here are typical lines pertaining to plip:

Nov 16 07:11:15 dragon kernel: plip0: transmit timeout(1,86)
Nov 16 07:11:23 dragon kernel: plip0: transmit timeout(1,c6)

Nov 16 07:13:01 dragon kernel: plip0: receive timeout(2,86)
Nov 16 07:13:01 dragon kernel: plip0: receive interrupt in error state

The above messages are from the box that already has Linux installed and
running and has a cdrom drive I can use. NFS is running.

Over on the target laptop I get something similar in one of the consoles:
plip0 timeout(1,87)

The SuSE install from floppies lets me load modules. When I ask to load plip,
it gives me parameter boxes to fill in, but I am unsure of what to put in
them. I leave them blank and parport, parport_pc and plip all seem to load
(lsmod). Over in another terminal I can see the messages reported when the
modules load:
parport0: PC-style at 0x378 (0x770) [PCSPP,TRISTATE]
parport0: irq 7 detected
plip: parport0 has no IRQ. Using IRQ-less mode, which is fairly inefficient!
plip0: Paralell port at 0x378, not using IRQ.

SO... I fear that my problem may be the above lines - the IRQ for the paralell
port on the laptop is not found correctly. I have not found any info on how
to pass parameters to parport (parport_pc) or plip.
Can anyone toss me a clue?

Ethereal shows portmap protocol being used; when I expand the portmap datagram
ti shows :
Porcedure: GETPORT (3)
Program: MOUNT (100005)

source and target addreses are the ones I assigned to plip0 with ifconfig and
they are also in /etc/hosts
Have I forgotten something in another config file in /etc?
