know the _REAL_ answer.

There is no way to build RAID and preserve existing data on one of the
disks. My advice to you is to buy IDE-RAID controller(around $80.00) and
get third 80G HD. Build RAID1 using 2 clean disks. Create same
partitions (same name and size) on RAID disks at install time. Boot new
OS using RAID disks and copy all data from original disk to your RAID.
Use "tar" or "CPIO" to do it the easy way. Then erase all data from old
disk and switch it with one of RAID disks. Return third disk if you are
not planning to use it. I hope all of it was clear enough.

I am not sure if I understood this question. But make sure you don't do
RAID on same disk. It makes no any sense at all.
