We use checkpoint fw-1.....It has been very stable...runs on all
platforms..a little pricy.
go to www.checkpoint.com and check it out. I am sure there is a linux
version of checkpoint.

Supported and recommended by who? I would recommend iptables which is
stateful packet filtering on the 2.4.x kernel.
