I prefaced it with :-

At that time, no-one could get to our, or anyone elses servers at the ISP as 
the whole subnet was down, due to some transient problem that was fixed in a 
little more than half an hour, yet instead of queuing and trying later, it 
bounced the mail to Paul.  
I specifically indicated that by by starting with the text above to illicit a 
more detailed response.  
Paul has already explained that these were responses from hotmail servers, be 
it DNS or mail so this is a different event than bouncing because you are 
unable to contact the DNS or mailserver.
