I heard an analogy somewhere recently, probably on the radio or slashdot, that compared car mechanics of yesteryear to IT people today. The thread was something to the affect of, when cars first came out they were pretty exotic and all, and knowing how to fix them put you in a great position. You were a specialist. Over time they became less mysterious, a lot more people knew how to fix them, and long story short it's just not what it used to be. Now IT guy is going the same route.
They'll always be needed, but with a flooded market and everybody and his/her brother understanding the basics and things less shrouded in mystery, specialists are now no more than dime a dozen joe blows.

IT: it's nice to know it...it's fun and cool...but probably won't land
