for the scanner, what do you get when you type "lsmod" (list modules
loaded) as root? does "scanner" show up? Also, do you have hotplugging
and the driver for your particular scanner installed? what model/make
of scanner is it...is it usb?

for the DVDRW, what does your /etc/fstab file look like? my first guess
would be that you are not specifying "user" or rw permissions.

Last time I used redhat, they had a mouse speed configuration gui that I
used to set the mouse speed. I assume you using gnome with redhat.
Check out their gnome system configuration menus from the panel/desktop
(I don't remember how it goes). Hope this helps!
