No, it won't 'pooch' the system (or it shouldn't, anyway). I've successfully
installed versions 7.x all the way to 9.1 on both my laptop (dual-boot
Mandrake 9.1 & Win98SE) and my desktop (Mandrake 9.1 via Connectix Virtual PC
on a Windows XP box).

Most importantly, BACK UP YOUR HOME DIRECTORY before you try this.

When installing Mandrake, instruct it to use the existing partitions. And, at
the end, you'll be presented with a screen to set up various parts of the
system. Scroll down to the bootloader portion to change the bootloader from
LILO (which is what Mandrake installs by default) to GRUB. Mandrake
automatically picks up and configures any non-Linux (i.e., WIndows)
partitions and adds them automatically to the GRUB boot menu. BTW, you'll
also be able to rename the menu items to something more English, like
changing 'windows' to 'MIcrosoft Windows 2000 Professional'.

The only thing you'll miss is that Mandrake's GRUB is text-mode only (not a
cool frame-buffered GUI like Red Hat's).
