Hi everyone,
This is a bit off topic, but Unix related, so I thought someone might be
able to provide some input.
The agency in Melbourne that I work for wants to get rid of one of their
old mainframes. It runs System V Unix on two 68040 CPU's.
The problem is that there remains a great deal of confidential data on
the hard drive in the form of System Z tables that can't leave the
agency. I'm fairly comfortable in a shell and System Z, so I wasn't
looking forward to too much difficulty.
The problem is that no one has used this computer in over 5 years and
anyone who knew anything about it has either left or stopped speaking
comprehensible English.
I know the IP address of the LAN interface (BNC) and my first thought
was telnet, but I haven't had any luck using that method to get a
console. I've been using a breakout box to test the leftover dumb
terminals and multiplexers and several terminal emulators on serial
ports, but the most I've been able to get is an echo from the machine.
If anyone could provide input about this machine or how to possibly get
to a shell, I would very much appreciate it.
