You will still be running the stock kernel. You are not compiling a
kernel per se, but only a module for the running kernel. To complete the
full kernel compile, you would need to create the bzImage and copy the
System.map and update/rerun lilo.
You should have no problems upgrading the kernel in the future.
When you initially installed Debian, you must have missed adding nfsd
kernel support during the device driver portion of the install.
Upgrading to sarge and sid will open up a whole new can of worms. I
would recommend sticking with woody.
