Thanks for the suggestions
Trouble starts at
Mounting local filesystem: mount Label=/boot duplicate not mounted
appears as if the /boot on the old hda, now hdb, is recognized
I am using lilo
I tried adding to fstab
/dev/hdb /mnt/hdb noauto
with no apparent change
your suggestion for fstab returned errors
any other suggestions before I try grub?
