I have /home as a separate partition. What I do is not tell the installer
about that partition, then afterwards use usermod if my UID's different
than what it was. I suppose your way might be neater, but I'm loath to
poke around in other users' $HOMEs.

You have to have

[*] IEEE 1284 transfer modes

selected in the kernel configuration. If you have a patched kernel, try
a stock one. I also have

alias parport_lowlevel parport_pc
options parport_pc io=0x378 irq=7 dma=0

in /etc/modules.conf, but I don't know how vital they are. Make sure you
have a bidirectional cable. Most today are, but if you're using an
antique, it may not be. Check /var/log/messages for relevant lines.
