Something is chewing up CPU on your machine. 73.6% idle is low; mine is
consistently at 90% idle when browsing the web and only dropping to 50% during
compiles.

Some of the things I've done to tune this machine include:
1) Switched window manager to fluxbox.
2) Turned off all extraneous services including:
   a) replace syslog
   b) disabled sendmail
3) Replace mozilla with Firebird
4) Replace konsole w/xterm

If you're happy with your current wm such as KDE you can also:
1) Disable animations and gui effects (they chew CPU and require extra memory
for pixmap caching).
2) Turn off sloppy window focus (applications get sent to the foreground if
you point the mouse to the window).

Run top then sort by processor by typing "P". Take a look at the first couple
processes and see if they're taking up lots of CPU (anything over 5%). Once in
a while updatedb or some lorgotating cron might be kicking off. If you see
kswap or something similar then some app is chewing up memory.

I've also see vi and gimp start chewing processes if you kill their login
window or shell.

BTW, what processor speed is your 4090? The 4090XDVD has a dual speed option
in the BIOS and maybe yours is locked at a lower speed? Since upping the
memory to 192M, mine has been great.
