Distro-custom kernels with dubious patches.

Some drivers die often enough that it's handy to be able to unload/reload
them when necessary. I _think_ some drivers can only be compiled as
modules, but I'm not sure. (Something in the back of my mind is saying
"PPP compression".) I know the reverse is true.
