Here in real life, as opposed to video games, movies, and TV shows,
someone you kill stays dead. If you shoot the wrong one, even the most
hearfelt "I'm sorry" won't bring him back to life. I do not consider
myself qualified to be instant judge and jury, and I say this as someone
who was a legally-armed cab and limo driver in high-crime Baltimore but
stopped carrying a gun after some personal reflection.

FYI, Saturday in Arcadia a cop drew his sidearm on a pair of "looters"
who turned out to be relatives of an aged/infirm homeowner. They were
trying to rescue what they could of her possessions from the rubble --
at her request. What if that cop had shot first and asked questions
afterwards?

I've killed a few people in my time (Army), so I know whereof I speak
when I say dead people stay dead. I am not opposed to the death penalty,
but I think we need to be very careful about how we convict people. The
foundation of our legal system is that it's better to let some criminals
go than to convict (and execute) even one innocent person. I'll leave
on-the-spot "justice" to Somalia and other extreme libertartian
countries. I do not want it here.

And to keep this on topic, I believe the right to a fair trial even
extends to virus writers and spyware purveyors. Remember, "Computer
viruses don't kill people. People kill people." Also remember, "If they
want to take away my Linux box, they're going to have to pry it from my
cold, dead hands."
