The problem is likely the X protocol itself. Though it was designed with
the network in mind, it's not at all efficient when it comes to
redrawinr or sending events. Move the mouse and you'll likely generate
hundreds of messages. Click on a button and dozens more get sent.

On the network level you can try things like tweaking the nagle
settings, tuning the packet size, etc.. On the application level try
compressing the channel and decreasing the events sent.
