I incorrectly thought they did. It's been a long time since I used modems.

   I said: "no connection to TELCO is required to connect two modems
together", modems do NOT use the talk current that the telephone exchange
supplies. (about 6 volts off hook)

   I said: "a conventional cord will work" by saying the specific cord to
use, not the "handset cord", but the "pedestal cord". A pedestal cord is
what I and others call the correct cord to connect two modems together.
