If your sound is not working it is not an issue with Mepis but with
alsa. You cant hold them responable. Alsa has a huge database of
soundcards and yet still there are sound chipsets that simply they have
not gotten to work. Linux is what I call Best Effort Software,
everyone who has a part in linux and software made for linux/nix/bsd
pretty much put there best effort into it. So henced should not be
heckled when something out of there own control goes wrong. I had a
problem with mepis, which roblimo to offence to at first because he
thought it was just another one of my Slackware is the best rants.
Long story short laptop cdrom had the same model number as another
drive by the same company but using slightly differnt insides than the
one I had own. So in a live slack cd the cdrom was working fine while
in mepis and found out later debian as a whole was having the problem.
I researched my problem found out that there is two different modules
for my cdrom one that supports 8x mode and one that support 10x(one i
had) and there was a init script to handle that some one else had made
that correctly identified the if it was the 8x-24x or the 10x-24x cdrom
drive and then load the right driver for it. I then sent Warren this
information and it quickly got added to Mepis and corrected. So if
sound is working on some other distrobution you have had on that machine
and mepis is not try and compare and constrast, run ideas by the list or
on mepis forums which provide a great deal of help. I dont think that
Robin has provided any false information as mepis is truly point and
click for most people.

Linux is a two way street. you give a little and get alot back in return.
