Heh. No, you're not the only one. I've found, however, that sometimes
the volume needs to be turned up in a very obscure location -- because
the obvious volume controls might not have any effect on the fact that
it's dead silent. ALSA and X itself both have some issues I could do
without, if there was a good-enough replacement.
