It looks like, starting with gnome2.2, the little gnomes are trying to make
gstreamer the integrated sound server for Gnome, much like arts is for KDE.
So I think everything with audio playback (including video players) in gnome
is being retrofitted to work through gstreamer. So then on the kde lists I
saw some talk about gnome and kde having a common sound server and someone
proposed using gstreamer and that was sternly rebuked even though arts is a
