Looks like an AC'97-based audio controller, which is typical of
on-board sound systems (similar to what I have on my HP Pavilion, but
then I later put in a Sound Blaster Audigy 5.1 card which made the
AC'97 issue irrelevant). Linux normally plays nice with these but I do
remember it having problems on my Pavilion.

possible target number one, like others have said, is alsamixer. You
can run it in a console or if you've installed alsamixer-gui you can
run it in X. If I remember the AC'97 set right on my Pavilion, there
was an additional "Mix" control or something like that that you had to
unmute or crank up in order for the rest of the volume sliders to have
any effect. You have to play with the sliders for a little while and
see if something happens.
