I write Java code for a living (among other things) but it's kind of
overkill for home projects. I'm looking at Perl with GTK bindings for
some stuff for home use.

Although if you know C++, it's a very short hop over to Java. So that
option would be there as well. Of course the awt and swing APIs may be
a bit of a speed bump. :)
