To my knowledge,

The upgrade is the full version without hard copy docs. No previous
install is needed. All the documentation is included in the disk set
for digital view. I think that ultimately they make their money up
front and if you wait around about 6 to 8 months, the release makes it
to their ftp site (unless that has changed in 9.3). We bought 9.0 at
the office, then the 9.1 upgrade when it came out. 9.2 I downloaded via
ftp... and I'll probably buy the 9.3 upgrade.

as far as the actual upgrade goes, I usually rsync my home dir and /etc
to a server, then clean format and install, then rsync back. Haven't
tried the official upgrade option. If you do, let me know how it
goes!! :^) I guess I'm just more comfortable knowing I have a clean
disk.
