You might try booting a Knoppix CDROM (Debian based). It should get you
a working X session, and you can then peek at the /etc/X11/* configs to
find a workable setup. You could even back-up your original config (even
though it isn't working), and copy the configs from the Knoppix boot,
onto your HD.

Again, Knoppix has very good hardware detection. Maybe do an 'lsmod'
from Knoppix, and see which modules it thought you should have loaded?

*** warning: Distro-war beginning in 5,4,3,2,1 *** I like Debian myself,
but to squeeze the last ounce of performance out of your hardware, you
might want a source-based distro like Gentoo. Every piece of software is
compiled on your hardware. Thus everything should be compiled targeting
your Athlon, rather than a 386 or 486.
