[SLUG] Logoff console -- from ssh login?

How do you cleanly exit the current Gnome session (logoff the console) when
you don't have physical access to the machine (but do have root access)? (or
when your X session is locked up by a misbehaving app. but you can switch to a
virtual console -- same question, really).

I remember trying this a long while ago and getting Gnome all wrapped around
the axle after killing various processes.

(I can't seem to find the right keywords to find a solution using Google)
