I can't speak for DSL, but I've loaded Fedora Core 1 on a laptop (and a
few other
computers) without cdrom using a the boot floppy, a 3C589 ethernet card
(the one
PCMCIA card supported by almost any release and distro). You can perform
an "accross the wire" install via http or ftp easily if you use a
not-overloaded mirror
site.
