The speakers have a polarized 2-prong plug, and an internal transformer.

I can try that tomorrow (not my machine).

Since the noise is unaffected by the SB's "Master" setting and it _is_
affected by the speakers' volume control, I can improve my S/N ratio by
turning up the computer and turning down the speakers, to the point where I
want it louder and the channel's at 100%.
